This is an old revision of the document!
Conduct and Themes
We would like to remind all participants that the spirit of the policy is to be considered more authoritative than the exact wording, and legalistic attempts to defend breaches of acceptable behaviour will not be treated as valid.1) We expect players to follow a general policy of treating other players with respect.
We would like to thank the OLS google drive|Oxford LARP Society, Snakepit Games and Kes's original https://sites.google.com/view/nine-candles-lrp/oc-info/conduct-policy-and-risk-assessmentsNine Candles LARP, from which most of this policy is inspired and derived.
Conduct
Unlike some games, Nine Candles is not a contact LARP. This means you shouldn't intiate physical contact with another player or ref without checking in Out of Character first. This includes all forms of contact, such as hugs or performing medical roleplay. Nine Candles is a non-combat game - in the event you wish to initiate combat with another character please negotiate Out-of-character with that player as to how you would like the combat to resolve narratively. However there may be some LARP weaponry used by NPCs - though this will be clearly telegraphed.
Players (and GMs) in Nine Candles are expected to maintain a good IC/OC divide. This means understanding that feelings between characters (whether that's anything from hatred to romantic) are between characters, and not the people playing them. We encourage you to talk to players who you've had particularly intense interactions with before/after sessions to make sure you are keeping the character seperate from the player. See our Tips for Rolplayers for more suggestions on this (including advice on character bleed).
As per the Conduct and Themes Policy, if you wish to raise an issue with regards to another player, please speak to a member of the Ref team; if you wish to raise an issue with regards to a ref, contact Cameron, the Head ref.
Illness
If you are unable to attend the event due to a Health issue (e.g. catching Covid), you will be able to receive a full refund. Please do not attend Nine Candles (South) if you have a transmissible illness. There are atendess who are immunocompromised, and even a “minor cold” can have serious health implications.
Peckwood Site Rules
As well as the game's conduct policy, there are a number of site rules for the Peckwood Centre:
- No smoking in the buildings
- No alcohol allowed on the site
- Keep noise down especially after dark
- Do not trespass on neighbouring land
AI Policy
Nine Candles is an AI-free game. All content (including wiki pages, IC documents, and concerns) will not be AI generated in any way. Players are also expected not to use AI as part of the game (such as when creating a character).
Themes
Nine Candles is a game focussed around death, and the end of the world. As such, dark themes will occur - if there is a particular theme you do not want to come up in the game, there will be a chance to raise these when signing up for the game. We will update a list below of any themes which will not be present in this game, as well as a list of potentially sensitive themes that are part of this game.
Potentially Sensitive Themes That Will Feature In This Game
- Death (As a reminder, every character will die at some point during this game)
- Darkness (There will be sections of this game that will be mostly or entirely in the dark)
Forbidden Themes
Out-of-character Behaviour Guidelines
When out of character, all players and Refs are expected to conduct themselves in a respectful manner toward all other players and GMs. In particular, any in-character portrayal of stalking or romantic obsession must not be initiated without the express out-of-character consent of the other player involved. Furthermore, all characters should be treated as the intellectual property of their players.
